Worries Rise Over Effect of Antibiotics in Animal Feed - Most of the antibiotics used on the farm are not administered to treat sick animals. Instead, farmers feed livestock a low-level diet of antibiotics to attack bacteria that might require the animal's body to expend energy to kill off. This allows animals to grow more quickly and, from a producer's point of view, more efficiently.  Farm animals treated with low levels of antibiotics are developing drug-resistant forms of bacteria, posing potential health risks in humans  -  Washington Post, March 17, 2000

Antibiotics and ear infections  In a study of 240 children under age two, it was determined that as long as parents or guardians can guarantee they will monitor the child's condition, there is no need to prescribe antibiotics on the first visit. Of the 240 children in the study, only eight children needed antibiotics on day four to improve their symptoms. Researchers say these findings do not justify prescribing antibiotics on the first visit. --- Feb. 7, 2000, Ivanhoe Newswire

Danger of Antibiotic use in newborns The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention report that use of the common antibiotic erythromycin in newborns has been strongly linked to the development of pyloric stenosis. The condition causes projectile vomiting and blocks the intestinal tract; it is usually treated with surgery -- Associated Press, 12/17/1999.

Antibiotics not helpful in most respiratory infections - Although antibiotics are generally prescribed for respiratory infections, researchers concluded that most respiratory tract infections in children have a viral cause and resolve on their own - Pediatrics, April 2000

Antibiotics not advised for children with E coli Infection - Antibiotic treatment of children with E coli infection increases a child's risk of hemolytic-uremic syndrome, which can result in kidney failure. The New England Journal of Medicine, May 29, 2000.
