The best of diets is only as good as the body's ability to utilize the food that is consumed. In order to gain benefit from what you eat, you must be able to digest the food and assimilate its nutrients. At Bamberger Center we work to restore the digestive system to optimal functioning so you can utilize your food.

We use a variety of diagnostic methods to determine the diet that is right for each individual. There is no one right diet for all people. In diet, as in life, there are many ways. If there is a general rule that applies to all people it might be that variety is of utmost importance.

There is no agreement among scientists and doctors as to what constitutes good nutrition. Often what is considered good nutrition one day will later fall into disregard.

bullet For years few people questioned low fat diets. Today we know that a low fat diet leads to increased incidents of dementia. When combined with high carbohydrate diet, it can create problems with insulin handling and more.
bullet Margarine was in for many years and butter was out, but now we now know that stick margarine is high in trans fatty acids that increase LDL cholesterol (the bad stuff) and increase our risk for heart disease.
bullet Eggs were once considered to be bad for people with heart disease, but today they are served to patients in coronary care units.

Of all the areas where modern science has failed us, it may be that it is in the area of nutrition that it has failed us most. Research findings are often contradictory. Prejudice and superstition often take precedence over reason and good research. Researchers study what we eat, giving little concern to how we utilize what we eat.

Nutrition and digestion - Often ignored in discussing adequate nutrition is the is the importance digestion plays. Without adequate digestion, we are not able to extract the needed nutrients from the food we eat so that they can be utilized by our body. A large percentage of Americans suffer from indigestion. Digestive aids are among the best selling drugs. But digestive aids that are available don't help us to digest food so that we can utilize the nutrients it contains. All they do is eliminate the discomfort. Digestive enzymes on the other hands do help with digestion, but do not get at the cause of our problem. They simply give us in pill form what the  body is not producing in sufficient quantity -- its own digestive enzymes. The healthiest diet in the world, if not digested, is useless

Digestive enzymes are produced by various glands in the body. Their function is to break down food so that its nutrients are available to be used by the body. For us to digest food properly two things must happen:

  1. We must chew our food so that it can be broken down into small pieces. Digestive enzymes do their work on the surface of food. If we do not break down our food into small pieces, the enzymes will never work their way to the center of the food, which will go undigested.
  2. The glands that produce digestive enzymes must be functioning properly. Among them the salivary glands, the stomach, the pancreas, and the liver. The gall bladder does not secrete enzymes, but it important in its ability to store bile.

Nutrition and assimilation:. Once the food is digested, the nutrients which are the end products of digestion must be absorbed into the blood stream so that they can be utilized by the body. This is done mainly done through the small intestine. Water and electrolytes (minerals) are absorbed through the large intestine (colon).

Nutrition and your nervous system - What medical doctors don't tell you is that if you have spinal nerve stress to the nerves that innervate the organs and glands involved with digestion, the digestive system will not function properly and you will not be able to digest and assimilate food properly.

Chiropractic and nutrition - Chiropractic balances the nervous system which controls the processes of digestion and utilization of food and the nutrients it provides.
