Massage as a Treatment for Infertility – Researchers noticed that a woman known to be infertile for seven years suddenly became pregnant after she was treated for low back and pelvic pain. They then used the same massage technique on eight other infertile women. Half became pregnant following the treatment. The treatment seems to be helping women who have adhesions in their reproductive tract. Adhesions act like glue, disrupting the function of the affected organ. The idea is that massage can help reduce adhesions in the reproductive tract. The treatment involves a gentle, specific stretch to loosen tightened areas of soft tissue. This is done until the tension releases. The goal is to decrease adhesions in and around the organs, ligaments, muscles, joints and support structures of the pelvis, abdomen, hips and low back. One especially encouraging aspect of this treatment, say researchers, is that from early studies these results seem to compare favorably to much more costly treatments. Many infertility procedures attempt to surgically bypass the actual cause of female infertility. Surgical techniques such as in vitro fertilization try to bypass poor reproductive function between the ovaries and the uterus. Ivanhoe Broadcast News, 3/24/2000
