Thyroid problems increase heart attack risk in elderly woman with no obvious signs of the problem, study findings suggest. A reduction in thyroid function is characterized by low metabolism, weight gain, dry skin, and mental and physical lethargy along with an increase in cholesterol and blood pressure, and consequently, the risk of heart disease. Sub-clinical hypothyroidism, which occurs in 10% of women in their 60s and 70s, appears to increase the risk of heart disease, according to recent study. in the February 15th issue of Annals of Internal Medicine. In sub-clinical hypothyroidism, patients have signs of thyroid malfunction on blood tests, but do not experience any obvious symptoms. The researchers estimate that sub-clinical hypothyroidism was the cause of 14% of all heart attacks in the study sample, a contribution just slightly less than other major risk factors, such as high cholesterol, smoking, high blood pressure, and diabetes --- Annals of Internal Medicine, 2/2000
